1874"When I was a teenager I was always very confident about what I wanted to do. I always wanted to be a journalist. But I don’t think I realised how lucky I was in being able to pick any career I wanted out of a hat.

“My mum is very selfless, she was a stay-at-home mum for a few years, but was a teacher beforehand. When I was a teenager she said this to me. And most women in the 70s who weren’t super intelligent or super rich or super lucky had those options as well. Maybe a secretary as well.

”I am a feminist and you always forget about what the women before you have done. You know they’ve given up a lot but you don’t really realise it that much until they put it in that context. Being an intelligent woman and being told ‘well, this is all I can do’ – it must have been dreadful. It still sticks with me now and I realise how lucky I am.”
