1676He was a student in Hull and had a part-time job as a sound engineer at the local student union. He also harboured dreams of being a full-time roadie, as it appeared to him to be an excellent life. But one day he met the manager of the band the Bluetones, who were playing a gig.

He asked what the students wanted to do after their studies, and as our subject explains in his audio clip, he replied: “I want to do what you’re doing.”

Mr Manager then pointed out a handful of his full-time roadies, and asked how old he thought they were. Apparently they looked, on average, a decade older than their actual age, a result of the roadie life they led. The manager then gave our subject this piece of advice.
