2188The three young men seen here are Wongama Baleni, Vuyile Msaku and Vusumzi Mamil who run a coffee shop called Department of Coffee in Khayelitsha township, Cape Town, South Africa. They say it’s the first place of its kind to open in a South African township and all three grew up in Khayelitsha.

Vuyile, seen on the right, explains their story in his audio commentary – “At the time we were starting our business it wasn’t easy. Many people in the township, they would never think that a coffee shop would work here. We did some training, registered the business in 2012 and the only thing we needed was the space. When we applied to some places to rent a space, people told us this.

”People in the township were having coffee with six or seven sugars. We’re trying to put knowledge in them that these coffee beans are nice when you drink it with less sugar in it. We’re also making our own roast blend of coffee.
